There was a team of four congregating at the Buttercross, Steve, Alan B, Jeff and me. It was a fine dry day with little wind warm and bright too. We decided on a slightly longer ride than normal The Green Welly Café at Chatteris was suggested as a destination and after asking one of the kind ladies at the Buttercross to take our photo we set off heading for Benwick, initially along Station Road but then where else but the Benwick Road. By the time we arrived in Benwick there were blue skies, after stopping briefly at the bridge and taking photos a detour took us into the village the village gives an air of being cared for by the people who live there with some nice landscaping. It was then out to the Forty Foot Drain and onwards to Chatteris alongside the drain.

The Green Welly is on the outskirts of Chatteris near the Aldi roundabout, the food was hot and reasonably priced. However, it was a long ride home ahead of us. It didn’t seem a good idea to return the way we came the Forty Foot Bank is a fairly busy road and cycling close to the water could be considered foolhardy.

We set off along the Doddinton road and after crossing over the drain making for Doddington when I spotted the sign for Dykemoor. A quick stop and a check on the map showed that Dykemoor Drove would take us back to Benwick Road and avoid riding through Doddington. I don’t think we saw one vehicle all the while we were in the drove, it was only when we were back on Benwick Road that a few vehicles shared the road with us.

Before Jeff left us at the Angle Bridge to return to Turves along Cock Bank, a derelict cottage caught my eye, we had noticed it on the outward journey but hadn’t seen the graffiti, the girl from Roger Rabbit I was informed. Steve and I made our way into Whittlesey alongside the railway into New Road while Alan carried on along Benwick Road. It was quite a long ride about twenty-six and a half miles, further than normal. A great ride out with excellent company as always.

Their first daughter was born with a silver spoon in her mouth. Now they’re hoping for triplets so they can have a whole set.

I spent a lot of time, money and effort childproofing my house … but the kids still get in.

Small son sitting on Daddy’s lap: “I’m still confused. Was I born in a nest or a hive?”

A Freudian slip is when you say one thing but mean your mother.

My mother was so surprised when I told her I was born again. She said she didn’t feel a thing!
